So what's it all about then...?
Let’s start at the beginning… In the mid 1970’s Richard Bandler and John Grinder set out to study what they deemed as excellent behaviour in others, especially in the field of therapy. They noted that particular therapists achieved outstanding results with their clients although they all used different methods. The first therapists they studied were gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, family therapist Virginia Satir, and Hypnotherapist Milton Eriksson MD.
By closely studying and modelling these therapists Bandler and Grinder discovered that they could determine what another person did internally to produce excellent results and behaviour externally, and then were able to install that behaviour in themselves.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a fascinating and intricate set of mind tools and techniques that enable change at an unconscious level.

Defining NLP is not an easy task; there are many different definitions out there. NLP is the study of excellence, which describes how our thinking produces our behaviour, and allows us to model the excellence of others and reproduce that behaviour.

Neuro:
The nervous system and the mind, through these we process our external experiences. They are processed via our five senses. Visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), kinaesthetic (feeling), olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste).

Linguistic
The language (including non verbal language) and words that we use, and their effect on the mind. The way communication is given meaning. The internal dialogue we have with ourselves.

Programming
The programs and patterns of behaviour that we run that produce the way we behave.

So what does it really mean?

Lets say that you were born with the greatest computer the world has ever seen; your brain. Your brain is capable of the most amazing things; it can learn and understand multiple languages, it can understand complex problems and multi-task solutions easily from day to day. It can learn to operate any machinery easily, can understand and reproduce music. It knows what you like and don’t like…you get the picture.

The only thing is that this amazing computer came to you without an instruction manual! Your unconscious mind (luckily) is there to run the most important aspects of your existence like breathing, keeping your heart beating and your blood flowing etc, but other more complicated software that was ‘loaded’ into your brain like talking or walking, learning to read, write, drive a car, use a mobile phone, play an instrument, this behaviour had to be installed and learned.

Keeping this in mind, lets agree that if all behaviour (software) is installed and learned, that sometimes software can get corrupted (like on your home or work computer).

So you find yourself with, say, a phobia? You didn’t always have it. You can’t really remember why you’ve got it. But it’s there. Like a corrupted file in the system. It holds you back from doing what you want to do. Or you used to be outgoing and confident, but something happened, something changed inside you and you’re not sure why…Others can deal with pressure at work, how do they do it?

Maybe you lack the confidence to deliver outstanding presentations, stay focused and control your state no matter the size or importance of the audience? Would it be of value to be able to negotiate effectively and hold successful meetings? How important is it to be able to communicate and understand your work force and be able to motivate them in the way they want to be motivated?

For those who work in education, you already know how important it is to be an effective communicator. Would you like to learn the language patterns and skills will help maximize your student’s potential? How about controlling your state when dealing with difficult situations? Or recognizing how learning strategies work and effectively helping with poor spelling strategies?

We’ve all heard how successful sports people often talk about being in the zone. The mystical place in their mind where they utilize their resources and push themselves beyond their capabilities. Ever wondered how they do it? Ever wondered if you too could keep calm when the pressures on? NLP has a range of techniques that are already being used by top athletes and sports people world-wide.

NLP is like an instruction manual for the brain, it can help to re-install the behaviour/software you want, and achieve the results you desire and deserve.

In other words NLP is how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

With NLP you can learn how to be in charge of your state, create the perfect relationship, achieve success in career and business, make more money, increase motivation and communicate effectively to produce the kind of results you want.

People who use NLP have certain presuppositions that they apply within their life.
Here are just a few

1. Respect for the other persons model of the world
2. People are not their behaviours- accept the person, change the behaviour.
3. Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available
4. The meaning of communication is the response that you get.
5. The map is not the territory
6. You are in charge of your mind and therefore your results.
7. All procedures should be designed to increase choice.
8. The Law of requisite variety- the system/person with the most flexibility of behaviour controls the system
